LOOKING TO GET TALKED ABOUT? WANT TO ATTRACT SOME ATTENTION?

OUTLETS ARE LOOKING FOR NEWS RIGHT NOW. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

Bad News First

When it comes to media attention, there's only one guarantee; If you don't have an appealing pitch, you WILL be ignored. Regardless of how meaningful, exciting or exotic you think it is, if THEY don't see it as pertinent, you won't get the attention you're hoping for.

But ...

The GOOD news is, even if your media release isn't the hottest late breaking story of the week, you CAN get noticed by following a few simple rules. In addition to what you send, timing comes into play too, and who you send it to is important. Tops on the rules list is, WHY you're sending the release. If the answer is because YOU want to tell your story, unless you're Paris Hilton or Brittney what's-her-name, it likely won't work.

What do you need for your media kit?

There's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all media or press kit. Customization is based on what you do and what needs to be highlighted for your media pitch. Some of the possible content of your kit includes;

Biography Photos Resume Fact Sheet Professional Credits Product Sample Business Literature

CUSTOMIZING YOUR MEDIA KIT

Bands & Entertainers
If you're new to the media game and are reading up on what's involved, take notice of the language of the articles you'll read. You'll find that some use the terms "press kit" or "media kit" where "promo kit" would be a more accurate description. They are NOT the same thing. This is particularly common mistake in the entertainment business. Although some of the items in these kits will be the same but there are some crucial differences that should not be overlooked.

Small Businesses
As a small business, it's less likely that you'll have need for a "promo kit", the way bands & entertainers do so there will be more to gathering what you need to embark on a media campaign. What's needed will depend upon what type of business you're in. For example, if you're in the fashion business, some photos showing your style might be appropriate. Why? Because it will indicate the audience (gender, age group) that you might appeal to. If you're a writer, a list of publication credits would be more appropriate to include. For professionals who are offering "expert" opinion for the media, a credibility-building resume would be helpful.

Writing a Press Release or Media Release
You can follow the steps to format a media release. Here's a good guide for the format. But as you will see, it first requires having a strategy that includes having a catchy headline, communicating why your news is "newsworthy", summarizing some achievements of the organization or person issuing the release, and having the skills to write succinctly. To make the best use of your media kit, get your strategy and release done professionally. See my media gallery for examples.

Above all else, you need a hook for the story.
This is what's going to make the difference between getting noticed and having your kit glazed over and ignored.

What kind of hook is going to work for you? That depends on what you do, the timing of the release, the audience you are wanting to reach and the type of media outlets you're going to approach.

What can you do with your media kit?
Traditional media like television and newspapers might come to mind, and they might be your preferred outlets but they're not the only ones. New media includes many popular blogs with big followings. Would you like them to be talking about you? Or what about online radio shows? Once you have your media kit together, all kinds of possibilities open up.

What kind of results can you expect?
Some of my clients have been very fortunate with coverage, including one that got a live remote television broadcast on location, and an another earned an "above the fold" front page newspaper story. Check out the details in the Media Gallery. I can't guarantee the same will happen for you, but I can guarantee that I'll try my best to get you noticed.
